At the beginning of the 1970s, Linz was still a steam locomotive Eldorado with locomotives of the 50, 52, 77 and 93 series. Apart from machines that had been repaired or partially repaired, the others were mostly in a rather dilapidated state, in other words: rusty and dirty.

A group of young lads - later co-founders of the Austrian Society for Railway History - set about visually optimizing individual steam locomotives.

The 77.66 was a particularly Gusto piece in terms of color scheme. It was given a "state railway" paint job. Boiler black, water tanks and driver's cab green, wheels red, wheel tires and boiler rings shiny. Although this color scheme had not been used on old Austrian locomotives or on locomotives from the time of the First Republic, we young people liked it and word quickly spread among railway enthusiasts and photographers about the gems that were running on non-electrified routes in Upper Austria.

The 77.28, which was added later, was given the same colorful look as the 77.66. It kept it for a long time after it was already owned by the ÖGEG. However, after its last major inspection, it was given back its traditional ÖBB livery.

Although the two "colorful" 77s were never consistent with railway history, they are still a piece of Austrian railway history because they are still in operation in this color scheme.
