Between 1969 and 1977, the ÖBB acquired a series 1042.5 (operating numbers 1042.531 to 707) modified to reflect technical progress with characteristic roof structures and single-arm pantographs that were reversed compared to the previously delivered locomotives.
The 1042.685 was assembled at Simmering-Graz-Pauker in Graz under the serial number 72813/1976, while BBC took the lead in the electrical part. In its first years of use, the locomotive was based at the Vienna South train haulage line. In the 1990s, starting with serial number 1042.531, a push-pull control was installed, among other modifications, and the locomotive was renumbered as series 1142.
After a collision with a freight train in February 2002, 1142 685 was repaired. The front of driver's cab 2 was given the then new, small headlights with adjacent tail lights, a larger shifting handle and handrails under the windows. On the side of driver's cab 1, there are still the large lower headlights, the smaller shifting handle and the handrails under the front windows that reach up to the driver's cab doors. The blood orange paintwork was also retained. This hybrid existence was retained even after a T5 repair and repainting in the Valousek design.
The locomotive was used for decades to pull all types of trains, and after being converted to 1142 685, it was also used to pull push-pull trains and heavy freight trains in multiple traction. The locomotive has recently been taken out of service and will probably soon be scrapped.
