As a further development of the 628.2 series, a total of 304 diesel multiple units of the 628.4/928.4 series were put into service in Germany between 1992 and 1995. The main changes compared to the predecessors are the wider doors at the close coupling ends. In order not to lose any space in the interior, the car bodies of the two-part vehicles were each extended by half a meter while the bogie spacing remained the same. This made them 46.4 m long. The additional weight of the vehicles required an increase in drive power: 485 kW instead of 410 kW are now available. The vehicles are used in most regions of Germany.
